HOW TO FIX: 'Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01' error after upgrading to Windows 10 1709

HOW TO FIX: 'Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater...' error when trying to start Outlook XP (2002) after installing the Windows 10 Creators Fall update (version 1709) or April update (1803)


This error occurs because of two missing registry keys:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02}
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
The error can be fixed by exporting and importing the missing keys from a working system or downloading replacements from the following links:
Once downloaded, double click the .reg file and proceed past the warnings by clicking 'Yes', 'Yes' and 'OK'.

    Hi,

    I just found your solution after having it found myself.

    Your Reg File only works in 64 Bit Systems. I have integrated both 64 and 32 Bit Solution.

    The Wow6432 Node is for 32 Bit Apps in an 64 Bit Windows. For them, they appear as HKLM\Software instead of HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node.

    So for a 32 Bit System, just remove the \Wow6432Node.

    Took me just a little too long as well. Since the Outlook problem, I've got a crashing computer and it won't connect now either. . Sorry to ask, but I still have to recover documents and wonder how I can add these registry keys manually? Thank you!

    No joy. Downloaded and have run both edits. Verified changes via regedit. Still get error message. Do I need to reboot?

    Real joy. A reboot made outlook work. Next step is to recover the month of emails from the gmail store and leave the confusing world of em client.

    This fix needs to be broadcast far and wide - there are so many forums that people have the same problem and no one knows about the fix.

    It does also work for the 1809 upgrade
    Just Right click and save the .Reg files and for 64bit Windows Systems, run as Matthew Green says above
    But as Marten Burrow says above, for 32 bit Windows Systems, just edit the two Reg files remove the characters \Wow6432Node then save and run them

    The registry entries allowed the program to start loading but then offers a window stating "You can now connect Outlook to your on-line social networks" (which I have to click to) then it closes that dialog then just shuts down the program. Very frustrating, Any ideas how to resolve this?

    This worked for my w10 1903 version on Outlook after installing XP-2002 Office. I happened to check the reg keys afterward and interestingly, among other items, it created the StubPath of "%ProgramFiles%\OutlookExpress\Setup50.exe" and when I look in my ProgramFiles or ProgramFiles(x86) folders, it does not exist, yet it works! May be a good idea to BU your reg prior to updates (File-export). Thank you very much! -Mike
